The Luggage Conundrum - How much to pack for your trip

Whether for business or pleasure, travel definitely requires some planning. Got a big trip coming up? Making sure you know what and how much to pack is a classic conundrum. You don't want to over pack, but you also don't want to be without an extra pair of shoes or a fresh blazer for that important networking meeting. Packing efficiently does involve some trial and error, but there are also some basic key tips to keep in mind before you head off on your next trip.

Plan Your Packing

Start by laying out absolutely everything you think you'll need for your trip, including outfits for more formal occasions and exercise gear if you plan to hit the hotel gym while you're away. Packing lists can also help if you like to note things down on paper. Then edit down one or two times until you have just the essentials. A few things you definitely don't have to take with you: a hairdryer (most hotels have them on hand) and towels. Remember that you will likely be able to buy small toiletries and other essentials at your destination, and, if you leave some space in your suitcase, it will give you the freedom to buy any tourist souvenirs at your destination. You never know what might catch your eye as you stretch your legs between meetings or are out wandering with your family.
Similarly, use the right-size suitcase. A bigger suitcase invites the opportunity to over pack. A hard-shell suitcase can help; its firm sides mean you'll have less space to squeeze in extra clothes. If you've chosen a black or silver bag, get an eye-catching luggage tag to help your bag stand out from the rest at baggage claim.

Start Your Packing

Use the space in your suitcase efficiently. No matter the size of your suitcase - whether you're just taking a carry-on or checking in a medium-sized bag - you can maximize the space you have. For example, you can pack socks within shoes or nestle a belt in the corner of the bag. Packing cubes can help maximize the space in your suitcase even more since you can fit multiple outfits inside a single cube. Packing cubes can also help you organize clothes by category, so you don't need to dig through the bottom of your bag to find some socks. Another tip: separate liquid toiletries from the rest of your clothes in reusable bags. That way, if one bottle spills or breaks during your trip, it won't ruin your clothes. To keep your clothes and suitcase smelling fresh, bring dryer sheets and leave your suitcase open overnight when you arrive so it airs out.
Of course, how you choose to pack is ultimately a matter of personal preference. Some people roll all their clothes; other people fold everything. If you have shirts or blazers that you're worried about getting wrinkled, a few sheets of tissue paper packed in between them can do the trick. You can also hang them up in the hotel bathroom once you get to your destination, so all the wrinkles fall out.

Ready to Travel

When you choose to pack is also a matter of personal preference. Do you prefer to pack hours before your flight, or the night before? Either way, make sure you are leaving yourself as much time as possible to put everything in and zip up your bag. If you know when you need to be at the airport or at that first meeting, count backwards from there. Give yourself extra time to pack last-minute essentials and do one last check to make sure you haven't forgotten anything. If you made a packing list, review it before you zip up your bag.
For airplane travel, keep your essential travel documents (boarding pass, passport, etc.) in an easily accessible pocket or clear plastic folder at the front of your carry-on luggage. It will save you time at the check-in counter and at the boarding gate - other things to keep handy: chargers, headphones, and magazines. If your flight is delayed, you'll want to be able to entertain yourself.
A neck pillow and scarf (for cold airplanes) are also must-haves to keep in easy reach. You don't want to have to pull your bag out of the overhead bin or the seat in front of you trying to find them. Two more things to have close by: earplugs and gum. Gum helps prevent your ears from popping on long-haul flights and makes it less painful when it does happen. If you're worried about delayed luggage - especially if you'll be making one or more connecting flights - stick a change of clothes in your carry-on bag, too.
